New Improved IPA Film Cleaning System Announced

Lipsner-Smith Company unveilled the new EXCEL 1100 Motion Picture Film Cleaning System at NAB, '96.

This new system offers more film cleaning power in a non-immersion system than ever before. It is the result of advancements in wet cleaning technology which were recently developed by our engineering laboratory.

The EXCEL1100 is designed to clean films in film laboratories, transfer facilities and other applications where more sophisticated solvent cleaning is not required.

Surface dirt is removed from the film by means of four molded polymer rollers. More difficult to remove embedded particles, oil and fingerprints are then eliminated by the EXCEL 1100, using four softnap rotary buffers, which are wetted with ozone-safe isopropanol.

Wetting is accomplished by means of a newly designed fluid delivery system that provides improved cleaning action. Cleaning liquid flow is adjustable so that even films that are heavily soiled can be quickly and effectively returned to optimum condition.

After wet cleaning, the film is polished, then dried quickly and safely, using the time-proven standard Lipsner-Smith warm air method. The film is finally passed over two additional polymer rollers prior to takeup winding.

The EXCEL 1100 is operator friendly, with straight line threading. Cleaning mechanisms automatically engage at startup.. Controls are located at eye level. All machine functions are under microprocessor control. The machine occupies less than 6 square feet of floor space and operates at 115 volts (220 volts optional).

The wetted cleaning mechanism used in the EXCEL1100 can be factory retrofitted to earlier EXCEL models.

The compact EXCEL is ideal for use in I film-to-tape transfer facilities, and in film laboratories for cleaning films used in the printing process.

London Transfer Facility Now Has Their Second CF3000-MK VI

The Machine Room Ltd., VTR plc Group's transfer and mastering facility, recently took delivery of their second Lipsner-Smith ultrasonic film cleaner.

The new CF3000-MK VI is installed in Machine Room's film treatment center, which handles film renovation, repair and cleaning for the group.

Paul Robinson, head of the Film Center, has 27 years experience in film restoration. His work includes "Madness of King George", "Dallas" and the early BBC "Doctor Who" episodes. He tells us:

"We are experiencing considerable demand from film makers, researchers and archivists, who are looking for the highest quality in film restoration and treatment.

"We now have six telecine suites, two of which have wet gate capabilities, so we are looking at considerable capacity when it comes to film cleaning.

"We have been very happy with our original CF3000 MK V and it was natural to choose the CF3000 MK VI supplement our capacity. "We tested several cheaper alternatives, but for quality and speed, the MK VI was the clear leader."

Concerned about health, safety and the environmental aspects of film cleaning, Robinson was particularly impressed with the MK VI's ability to recycle over 90% of the solvent used in the film cleaning process. It was also essential that the cleaner be capable of using solvents that are not ozone depletors.
